Currency Handling in Cash Management
JustOn Cash Management operates on one currency per record and does not convert amounts between currencies. An entry and a payment can only be settled with each other if they have the same currency. This applies to automatic and manual settlement as well as to all other operations that combine amounts of different records.
Note
This differs from the payment entry and balance handling of JustOn Billing & Invoice Management, which converts amounts between currencies, see Payment Matching With Multiple Currencies. Moving from balances to JustOn Cash Management means that this conversion is no longer available.
Currency Model
JustOn Cash Management uses the Salesforce standard field Currency (CurrencyIsoCode) of its records. The relevant objects – entries, payments, entry items, refunds and reductions – have no currency fields of their own. The Currency field is only available if multiple currencies are enabled in the Salesforce org.
- Single-currency org
- All records implicitly use the corporate currency of the org. Currency handling does not affect any operation.
- Multi-currency org
- Each record has exactly one currency, which applies to all amounts of the record. JustOn Cash Management does not store conversion rates, original amounts or original currencies, and does not use the Salesforce conversion rates or dated exchange rates. Enabling advanced currency management therefore does not affect JustOn Cash Management.
As a consequence, the same currency is a prerequisite for every operation that combines amounts of different records. Depending on the operation, JustOn Cash Management rejects records with different currencies or skips them, see Currency Handling per Operation.
Org Prerequisites
Using multiple currencies with JustOn Cash Management requires the following:
-
Multiple currencies are enabled in the Salesforce org, see Enabling Multi-Currency Support.
Once enabled, multi-currency support cannot be disabled.
-
Every currency your business uses is set up as an active currency in the Salesforce org. Otherwise, operations like creating a payment page link fail with the message
Currency not supported.
JustOn Cash Management detects multi-currency support of the org automatically. There is no dedicated setting for currencies.
Currency Origin
JustOn Cash Management determines the currency of a record by its origin:
| Record | Currency |
|---|---|
| Entry | Created from an invoice: the currency of the invoice. If the invoice holds a target currency (ON_TargetCurrency), this currency takes precedence.Invoices in different currencies always produce separate entries, even with the same assignment key. One account or business entity can therefore have entries in multiple currencies. Created otherwise, for example, via API: the currency set by the creating process. |
| Bank account, bank statement | The account currency as reported by the bank. |
| Payment from bank statement item | The account currency as reported by the bank, not the currency in which the payer has instructed the payment. The bank statement item keeps the instructed amount and currency for information only. They are not used for matching or settlement. |
| Refund | The currency of the original payment. |
| Reduction | The currency of the reduced entry. |
Info
JustOn Cash Management supports one currency per bank account. Bank accounts that hold balances in multiple currencies under one IBAN are not supported: if a bank data retrieval returns multiple currencies for the same account, JustOn Cash Management cancels the retrieval with the message Multiple currencies returned for an account. Set up a separate bank account for each currency.
Currency Handling per Operation
- Automatic settlement using data comparison
- On automatic settlement using data comparison, the matching configurations compare amounts as plain numbers, irrespective of the currency. If a bank statement item matches an entry with a different currency, JustOn Cash Management does not settle it. The bank statement item remains without payment, see How to settle a bank statement item that has no payment?
- Automatic settlement of new entries with existing payments, like prepayments
- JustOn Cash Management considers only payments with the currency of the entry. Payments with a different currency remain unassigned.
- Manual settlement
- On manual settlement, the Edit Assignments dialog rejects the assignment of an entry with a different currency when saving. The amount to assign is always interpreted in the currency of the payment.
- Direct entry settlement
- Settling a debit entry and a credit entry with each other requires the same currency. Otherwise, the settlement fails with the message
Currencies do not matchon both entries. - Entry reduction
- Entry reduction is not affected. The reduction always uses the currency of the entry.
- Refund
- Refund is not affected. Refunds always use the currency of the original payment, and the refund amount is interpreted in this currency.
- Payment page
- When using the payment page, JustOn Cash Management passes the currency of the entry to the payment provider. The currency must be active in the Salesforce org and supported by your merchant account at the payment provider. JustOn Cash Management does not check the latter – an unsupported currency is rejected by the payment provider.
A payment page link for multiple entries requires all entries to have the same currency. - SEPA payment run
- SEPA orders support EUR only. The SEPA payment run does not filter entries by currency. Make sure to keep entries in other currencies out of SEPA payment runs, for example, by setting their
Requested Payment Methodto a value other thanSEPA.
Foreign Currency Payments
How a payment in a foreign currency is handled depends on the currency of the receiving bank account.
- Payment to an account in a different currency
-
A customer pays an invoice in USD to your EUR bank account. The bank converts the amount and reports it in EUR. JustOn Cash Management creates the payment in EUR, with the amount converted by the bank.
- If the entry is in EUR, the settlement takes place as usual. Due to the conversion rate and bank fees, the payment amount usually does not exactly match the entry amount. JustOn Cash Management treats the difference as a partial payment or an overpayment. You need to handle it like any other open amount, for example, by reducing the entry.
- If the entry is in USD, payment and entry have different currencies and cannot be settled. You need to resolve the currency mismatch, see Resolving Currency Mismatch Between Payment and Entry.
- Payment to an account in the same currency
- A customer pays an invoice in USD to your USD bank account. The bank does not convert the amount, and JustOn Cash Management creates the payment in USD. Payment and entry have the same currency and can be settled as usual.
Info
To prevent currency mismatches, JustOn recommends to set up a dedicated bank account for each foreign currency your business invoices in. This way, the bank does not convert incoming payments, and payments keep the currency of the invoice.
